I’m a British Gas engineer – here are five radiator tips to cut heating bills

As the weather cools down, many people will be switching their heating on to warm up.

However, with the cost of living crisis continuing, it is likely Britons will be looking for ways to cut their energy bills.

Rather than wearing thick jumpers and investing in a warmer duvet, there are a number of radiator tricks that could help keep costs down, according to British Gas engineer Sunny Solanky.

1. Put foil behind radiators

By now, many people will have heard of this trick and it does work. According to Sunny, homeowners could save £25 a year by fitting radiator foil or tin foil behind their radiators.

Rather than hot air being blown at the wall, the foil will reflect it which means homeowners should waste less energy and therefore save money.

Sunny told The Sun: “This trick works very well where you have radiators that sit on external walls and in properties with solid walls.”

2. Bleed radiators

Bleeding radiators will ensure they run properly. If your radiator has cold spots then it has pockets of trapped air inside which means it needs bleeding.

The air pockets prevent the heated water from circulating. Allowing the trapped air to be released is a free, simple way to make your radiators work more efficiently.

3. Don’t heat all the rooms

Heating all the rooms up in a house is a complete waste of energy and therefore money.

Instead, simply heat up the rooms you need. Sunny added: “It’s important not to spend money heating spare rooms or other rooms not in use during the winter.

“So if you know a room isn’t going to be used then make sure you turn the radiator off and close the door to stop cold air circulating through the rest of the house.”

4. Reposition furniture

Sofas, chairs, tables and other furniture placed against a radiator will block hit our from circulating around the property which will make a home feel colder.

Make sure large pieces of furniture are not blocking radiators so your heating can work most efficiently.

5. Install thermostatic radiator valves

A thermostatic radiator valve (TRV) will detect the temperature of the room, and then adjust the flow of hot water into a radiator so that the room is as warm as you want it.

TRVs allow homeowners to set different temperatures for each room and only heat the rooms they want to heat.
