How to keep flies away

Keep it clean

Flies will be more attracted to your home if it is not clean. In particular, don’t leave food out and keep your bins as clean as possible.

Bags of water

It is claimed by some bags of water hung by windows and on porches will throw off flies by confusing their vision.

Citronella candles are good at keeping flies away from particular spots in the home you may not want them, such as on your kitchen counters or on your porch.

Stay secure

Keep doors and windows closed to prevent flies from coming in, and install fly screens.

Deploy plants

Certain plants are great for keeping flies away because they don’t like the smell.

Plants flies don’t like include:

  • Mint
  • Catnip
  • Bay leaves
  • Lavender
  • Marigold

Flies often appear in the heat, and Lynsey shared her top tips to deal with warm weather too.

“Keep plants in the window to absorb the heat,” she advised.

Lynsey’s hot weather tips

  • Strategically place fans facing the windows to push the hot air out
  • Close blinds at the hottest time of the day
  • Eat salads to save having the oven on
  • Take the loft hatch down so hot air can escape
  • Use cool cotton sheets and turn lights off
  • Rely on natural lighting
  • Don’t charge any devices in your bedroom as these radiate heat.
