As one of the most renowned and recognised “hellraisers” in rock music for the best part of six decades, Keith Richards is the lead guitarist and founding member of iconic British band The Rolling Stones. Together with The Rolling Stones, Keith Richards has sold an estimated 200 million albums worldwide. Characterised by his growling voice and penchant for the finer things in life, Richards alongside Mick Jagger became the embodiment of sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll throughout the 1960s and 1970s. While Keith spends most of his time at his Weston home with his wife Pattie Hansen, he likes to use his property in West Wittering as an escape from his USA lifestyle.

The Chichester Harbour village of West Wittering is a well-known haunt for celebrities. From Kate Winslet to Michael Ball, a whole host of global stars have been enchanted by the tiny West Sussex village.

And who can blame them? Residents have the luxury of incredible views over the harbour and towards the Isle of Wight, while it also has one of the only sandy beaches on offer in Sussex.

One such person who fell in love with West Wittering is The Rolling Stones rocker Keith Richards, who purchased the infamous Redlands Cottage in 1966. In his autobiography he describes coming across a “small thatched cottage” after making a wrong turn.

After the owner came out to speak to Richards, he asked whether he was looking for a house to buy.

The Grade II Redlands Cottage was built in the 15th century, with a moat around it. A few months after he purchased Redlands, Keith bought the cottage across the road for an additional £5,000.

West Wittering is a dreamy seaside village, offering all you could want and more from a country retreat. As a result, it is also home to some of the most expensive houses in the county.

Three streets in West Wittering make it into the top five most expensive roads in the whole of West Sussex.
