Remove a red wine stain from white clothing with handy mixture

Queen of Clean shares tip for removing red wine stains

TikToker Holly Auna tried out a hack that she admitted she didn’t think would work, but it did.

“I did not think this was going to work,” said Holly. “But it works like magic.”

Whether it’s a white shirt, top, jumper, trousers or skirt, you can make this handy mixture to get rid of a red wine stain.

All you need is to mix three parts hydrogen peroxide and one part dishwasher soap for the stain removal.

Then, after taking the piece of clothing off, blot the red wine stain with the hydrogen peroxide and dishwasher soap mixture using a paper towel.

“Then leave it somewhere between 20 minutes to an hour; after it sits, take another paper towel and dab it dry,” said Holly. “Next, just throw it in the washer, and add the detergent like you normally would.”

You need to then turn the washer on cold, press start, and the stain should be removed by the time you take it out of the washing machine.

One fan, Joshua Hunt, said: “I’m still amazed this worked.” Another, Sharon, said: “That worked great.”

However, a follower insisted that “sparkling water also works”, and so does “white wine”. Washing detergent Persil noted: “A fresh wine stain is always easier to treat than an old one.”

Simple tips to remove a red wine stain include:

  • Soak up the red wine immediately using a napkin or paper towel (don’t rub)
  • Keep the stain damp by adding cool water
  • Cover the fabric with salt
  • Repeat the process
  • Apply commercial stain remover
  • Launder as normal, but at 30 degrees
  • Only tumble-dry or iron if the stain is entirely gone.

Hot temperatures could set the stain, which is why hot water should be avoided.

What not to do

Do not, under any circumstances, rub the paper towel or napkin into the stain. Do not let the wine stain dry, or use hot water on the red wine stain.

Also be aware that more delicate fabrics, such as silk or leather, may need to be taken to a dry cleaner.

And remember to consult the care labels on your garment before treating the stain.
